Dien Bien Arabica DBDM, whole beans

This is a product created by an on-going sustainable coffee development project implemented by Oriberry coffee with financial supports from 3 Japanese companies lead by Corporate Social Responsibility department of SUMITOMO Forestry Co. Ltd. The product brings income and jobs opportunities to coffee farmers, Thai ethnic minority group, by involving them to our coffee value chain.

Muong phang is a poor mountainous commune of Dien bien province, north of Vietnam. The commune has 3 ethnic minority groups, with 229 households (901 people) living in poverty, accounting for 20.69%. Five years ago, some farmers started to bring small coffee trees from Muong Ang district, the biggest coffee plantation area of Dien bien to plant in the commune. Trees have been developed well, cherries are big and strong, but to sell cherries farmers have to bring them back to Muong Ang (30km away) as their low productivity does not attract cherries collectors and they were not able to process them to beans.

In 2015, the project helped farmers in Tan binh village of Muong Phang commune developed a demostration coffee farm of good agriculture practices, supported them to build a household level processing mill. The local processor was required to apply the same price as Muong Ang’s when he buys cherries from farmers. By the end of 2015, farmers in Muong phang produced their own parchment for the first time.   

The product that followed Oriberry code of conducts went to Oriberry roastery in Hanoi early 2016. The product consists of coffee from Muong Phang commune and Muong Ang district, which has natural sweet taste, dried berries and bright flowery smell. The medium dark roast is excellent for drip.
